Montpellier Massane

Located less than half an hour’s drive from Montpellier city centre, the course at Golf de Massane-Montpellier is a late 1980s design from Ron Fream, built at a time when the American architect was heavily involved in a number of French golf projects which included Arcangues, Disneyland Paris and Golf Parc Robert Hersant.

Today, there’s a 6,128-metre 18-hole course in play here, complemented by a short par three 9-hole layout that allows beginners to get a feel for the game. On the main layout, the nines have been reversed since the facility first opened and the signature hole is undoubtedly the par five 14th (rated stroke index 1) which doglegs slightly right to a huge island green.

The Peugeot Golf Guide describes the course as follows in this edited extract:

"Numerous water hazards, front bunkers and different lines of approach to the green call for introspection and force players into tactical decisions and into choosing exactly when to lay up short or when to carry the hazard. The bunkers and greens are very well designed with the typical smooth shapes of a Ron Fream design.”
