Mount Maunganui Golf Club is located in the heart of New Zealand’s premium beach holiday spot. MMGC is yet another tree-lined parkland style offering in the NZ golf scene, however probably finds itself at the upper end due to its elite conditioning and a number of more interesting holes, particularly the set of sharp dogleg par 4s.

The overall layout of MMGC is decent. Shorter holes boast narrower landing areas paired with smaller greens, and the longer holes have more room for error- textbook course design. The golf course offers options for all players and a risk-reward balance on a number of tees promotes decision making. There are definitely a couple of headscratchers and I think the par 5's are a pretty poor set golf holes, with little features of note. Generally, there's enough variety in the shape and design to keep you interested.

Green complexes are interesting with a decent set of well constructed, sloping greens. Greenside protection is average, with a few shallow bunkers providing the main defense. The course sits on flat land, with little movement tee to green which restricts variety and intrigue.

Overall, MMGC is a solid parkland offering amongst a collection of them in NZ and is worth a round. It won't blow you away by any means but is well conditioned, friendly and welcoming.
