One of more than a dozen courses - including Estancia, Vaquero and Gozzer Ranch - operated by Michael Meldman’s Discovery Land Company, Mountaintop is a Tom Fazio design that’s set within a private mountain retreat in the Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains.

Tree-lined holes are routed around the wetlands of Hurricane Lake with significant elevation changes encountered along the way, starting at the first and second holes, both of which drop over one hundred feet from tee to green.

It’s not all downhill freewheeling, of course and golfers have to negotiate one or two inclines during the round, most notably during the closing holes at the par four 15th and 488-yard 18th.

Description: The course at Mountaintop Golf & Lake Club was fashioned by Tom Fazio and it’s set within a private retreat in the Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains where fairways blend in beautifully with the flowing landscape. Rating: 3 out of 6 Reviews: 1

Within the city limits of Cashiers, NC, players will find another example of Tom Fazio sparing no expense for immaculate conditioning. Being a scratch golfer, I didn’t get too excited about this place and question Golf Digest putting in a top 100 list. There were many holes that didn’t make sense to me. My friends who live in the area don’t enjoy coming here because it’s too penal and just not as enjoyable as nearby Sapphire Valley or Wade Hampton. I couldn’t argue with them when my crisp sand-wedge approach shots could barely hold the greens (which got frustrating very quickly) and I don’t really appreciate playing par 4s which are uphill and greater than 500 yards. You find yourself hitting lots of long shots here which, when combined with rock hard greens, leaves its mark. One and done for me.

I must say I disagree with the review of Mountaintop. I don’t feel that Sapphire Valley Country Moutaintop Golf Course - Photo by responderClub is in the same league as Mountaintop. Wade Hampton, Mountaintop and Diamond Creek are Tom Fazio’s finest examples of the greatest Mountain golf courses in the country. Mountaintop has been ranked as high as 85 in the US by Golf Digest, and also by Links magazine, and once you play here you can see why it’s a top 100 course. As soon as you pass through the gates of Mountaintop, and say hello to the basset hound on guard you can feel the mystique, and see the beauty all around you. When you arrive, the staff treats you as if you are royalty. Once you step foot on the first tee box, you can see the greatness of Fazio, and the amazing views of the course seem to get better with each hole. Mountaintop isn’t just about the Golf course; it’s about an amazing experience, it’s about the staff, the amazing members, and the most amazing service you can encounter at any golf course you play. The comfort stations are amazing, where else can you have a chef cooking Kobe beef sliders at the turn. Mountaintop is a golf experience you will never forget.
