One of more than a dozen courses - including Estancia, Vaquero and Gozzer Ranch - operated by Michael Meldman’s Discovery Land Company, Mountaintop is a Tom Fazio design that’s set within a private mountain retreat in the Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. Tree-lined holes are routed around the wetlands of Hurricane Lake with significant elevation changes encountered along the way, starting at the first and second holes, both of which drop over one hundred feet from tee to green. It’s not all downhill freewheeling, of course and golfers have to negotiate one or two inclines during the round, most notably during the closing holes at the par four 15th and 488-yard 18th. |
Reviews for Mountaintop
I'm shocked that Mountaintop is ranked 16th in North Carolina. Personally, after playing several other in the state's top 10, I would put 2nd, or maybe 3rd at worst.
Pros:
-Wow factor and aesthetics are amazing
-Tremendous property with immense elevation changes and natural setting
-Great mix of tough and easy holes
-Smooth, fast greens with enough contour to challenge the best players but not cause the average golfer to 4-putt all day
-A great compliment to Wade Hampton, which is 10 minutes down the road
Cons:
-Routing isn't the best, with a few lengthy transitions between holes
-A few very forgettable holes
-Mountaintop features 5 par-3's, and only the 14th really stands out. Very surprising giving the elevation changes and terrain
Overall, a great way to spend an afternoon. If you can get on Wade Hampton as well, it makes for an amazing day of golf.

Within the city limits of Cashiers, NC, players will find another example of Tom Fazio sparing no expense for immaculate conditioning. You find yourself hitting lots of long shots here which, when combined with rock hard greens, leaves its mark as a tough course. An immaculate clubhouse with top notch service.
