Wow, what a course & what a club!!
Played yesterday, just after maintenance, so we didn’t see the greens in their full glory but even so they rolled well & could tell in normal condition they must be absolutely epic. Many large greens, with subtle slopes, proper movement - the sort of surfaces that reward imagination & touch
The course itself is excellent. A proper thinking golfer’s test, beautifully routed over dramatic coastal terrain without ever feeling forced or overdone. There’s a lovely balance between challenge & playability. Miss in the right place and you’re still alive. Miss in the wrong place and you’re going to struggle. A fair test with plenty of strategic decisions from the tee rather than endless brute carries.
The bunkering & sand scrapes are a highlight. Visually strong, very much in play, & asking questions on almost every hole. They frame the holes superbly and add bite without tipping into punishment for punishment’s sake. It all feels very intentional. All the members we spoke to seemed genuinely thrilled with the major changes that have been made in recent years, and you can see why.
Shame it was a cloudy day, because even then the setting is outstanding. The big reveal after the 2nd shot on the 5th hole & the 6th beingobvious visual highlights but generally NSW is set above the coastline, with holes that tease the ocean rather than constantly shout about it. In bright sunshine however the views must be out of this world & I suspect the whole experience lifts another notch again. Even in muted light and post maintenance conditions, we had a superb experience. A really strong course, hugely enjoyable, and one I’d love to see again when the greens are at full tilt and the sky is blue. Very impressive.
