North Manchester Golf Club was founded in 1894, with an 18-hole course laid out on ground rented from the Earl of Wilton at Crumpsall. When this property was due to be sold in the early 1920s, the club purchased Rhodes House and 180 acres of land in order to relocate.

James Braid approved the site but for some reason he didn’t design the new layout. That task went to the club’s professional, Archie Compston, assisted by club member Herbert Townley. The new Rhodes course opened for play on 20th September, 1925.
Today, the course extends to 6,491 yards from the back tees, playing to a par of 71, with holes arranged as two returning nines (each of which concludes with a par three close to the clubhouse). The shorter back nine features only one par five hole, at the 480-yard 17th.
Highlight holes include the left doglegging par four 2nd (rated stroke index 2); the only short hole on the front nine at the 189-yard 9th; the left veering par four 10th (rated stroke index 1); and the par five 17th, with out of bounds running the length of the hole on the left.
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
