North Ridge Country Club

North Ridge Country Club sits on 200 acres of the original San Juan Land Grant in Fair Oaks, a residential community in Sacramento County roughly ten miles east of downtown Sacramento. The land was acquired in the early 1950s by a group of local golfers frustrated by the scarcity of weekend tee times at public courses in the region — a practical frustration that gave rise to one of Northern California's more enduring private clubs.

The club was incorporated in 1952, and in 1953 William Bell & Son were engaged to design and construct the course. The father-and-son team of William Park Bell and William Francis Bell — known universally as Billy Bell Jr. — were among the most prolific golf architects working in California during the mid-twentieth century. Their portfolio includes Torrey Pines, Stanford Golf Club, Riviera Country Club, and Bel Air Country Club, names that place North Ridge in distinguished company. The first nine holes opened on Labor Day 1954, and the full eighteen followed on Memorial Day 1955.

The layout occupies rolling terrain that was, at the time of construction, largely native Fair Oaks landscape — indigenous oak trees, natural waterways, and the undulation of land that had not yet been shaped by the suburban development that now surrounds it. Bell's routing works with these elements rather than against them, producing a parkland course with a sense of natural character that remains intact more than seventy years later. Mild elevation changes, strategically placed bunkers, and large multi-tiered greens define the playing experience, and the course is laid out to be genuinely walkable — a quality the club takes some pride in.

In 2018, the greens and bunkers underwent a comprehensive $3.5 million renovation supervised by Robert Trent Jones II. The work modernised the playing surfaces to current USGA standards while preserving the routing and overall character of the Bell design. Robert Trent Jones Jr. noted at the time: "As the renovation matures, this should be the best true 'golfer's club' in Sacramento." The renovated greens are Bentgrass, while the fairways remain Bermuda — a combination common in the Sacramento Valley, where the climate favours both.

The course plays to a par of 72 from nine sets of tees. The Championship tees stretch to 6,840 yards with a rating of 73.9 and slope of 140, making it a genuine test from the tips. The graduated options — running through Red, Red/White, White, White/Orange, and Orange for men, with additional forward tees for women down to 4,943 yards — bring the course within reach of players across the ability spectrum. The club describes an average round pace of just under four hours, which speaks to both the routing efficiency and the management of tee time intervals.

Practice facilities are extensive: two putting greens, a dedicated chipping, pitching and sand bunker area, a par-3 practice hole, and a three-tiered full-length driving range with four target greens. A performance centre with video swing analysis technology is also available, reflecting the club's ongoing investment in the playing experience.

North Ridge is a proprietary ownership club — members hold actual ownership interests in the property, a structure that dates to the founding and gives the membership a long-term stake in its stewardship. The club has hosted multiple California Golf Association championships over the years, reinforcing its standing in the regional game. It remains a private members-only facility, with no public access.
