The following edited extract is from James Braid and his Four Hundred Golf Courses by John F. Moreton and Iain Cumming:

“The owner of the land, T.L. Kirk, and a professional, F. Mason, laid out the course. In 1910, Braid was asked for his comments and advice. It appears that Braid changed the position of holes 15 and 16, making them 5 and 6, lengthened holes 3 and 4, shortened 7, lengthened 8 and 12 and shortened 18, as well as, no doubt bunkering the course more effectively.

Since then, there have been some changes. The two nines have been reversed and, seemingly, three holes have been made, and four more have had major surgery, but the 1909-10 course is mainly alive and well.”

Today, the layout extends to 6,216 yards from the back markers, playing to a par of 71 (37 out then 34 in), with holes laid out as two returning nines. Highlights include the slightly right doglegging, long par four 5th and the last (and shortest) of the par threes at the 141-yard 14th.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
