Exceptional championship course. The course is not as difficult as its reputation led me to believe. It's hard, but not punitive for its own sake (save the 7th hole, which I talk about below).
Highlights for me were holes 2, 6, 9, 12, 13, 14, and 18. Oak Hill's best golf holes should be talked about as some of the great parkland golf holes in the world. The 9th and 12th holes are amazing. They lie perfectly on the land and the architecture uses the contours and green sites perfectly. 2, 13 (especially the greensite and area 150 yards and in) and 14 are the other three golf holes that are phenomenal.
The 7th hole is a bit of a headscratcher for me, and the only real blemish on an otherwise elite course. It's an uncomfortable tee shot, with a creek running down the right in the less-than-driver landing zone and trees overhanging the left side of the fairway. A relatively mystifying hole where taking on the risk (creek down right) only punishes you with being blocked out by the massive tree up near the green.
Loved Andrew Green's bunker and hazard presentation, the conditioning, and fairly dramatic and interesting (and difficult) green contouring overall (the knob in the back middle of the 4th still rings in my ears).
Par-3s were slightly below the high standard set by the variety and use of land on the par-4s. Same as the par-5s (save the 13th greensite area as mentioned above and the green surrounds on 17, with the hummocks and bunkering there). But this is nitpicking and is only noticeable because the course has five of the truly exceptional par-4s in golf.
Overall, well-deserving of its place high in the rankings.
