The Amendoeira Golf Resort is situated in the central Algarve district of Silves, half an hour’s drive from Faro airport and the two new courses here – Faldo and O’Connor Jnr – are the first to be constructed within a rural area that once held dominion over the south coast of Portugal.

Once part of the burgeoning Oceânico golfing empire, Amendoiera’s pair of 18-hole championship layouts are complemented by a 9-hole par three track which is floodlit for evening use, along with a number of practice chipping and putting areas. In all honesty, it’s a modern golf facility to match any of the others along this famous golfing coastline.

Faldo’s course calls for golfers to play strategically, avoiding the desert scrub bunkers, rocky outcrops, wandering water hazards and olive trees that lurk in wait for errant shots. Careful positioning of the golf ball will afford the opportunity to score well so “keeping it in play” are the main watchwords here, especially on the hillier back nine.

Nick Faldo is really pleased with the course, saying, “the land at Amendoeira is dramatic and the project has the potential to be a real talking point in the Algarve. With so many courses in the region, that’s no mean feat. This is a very exciting project, which gives me a great opportunity to exploit my passion for design. You have incredible views, beautiful undulating land and any time you get natural terrain like this, it is great fun to work with”.

Played in January 2011, this really is a cracking course which makes the most of what can at best be described as difficult terrain. Suffice to say you would not want to play it without a buggy.A really tough opening hole, and it doesn't really get any easier. There are some classic risk/reward holes, the first being the par 4 3rd - 310 metres from the yellows, but driveable if you take the short route, with all sorts of trouble if you make a mess of it! To be fair the course looks more difficult from the tees than it perhaps plays, and some good scoring opportunities are available if you keep the ball in play. Some really tricky greens, which we found in excellent condition, and a splendid clubhouse. Put it on your list of must-plays.

Played the course on 7th November 2010. We have been travelling to the Algarve for a number of years on golfing trips playing at all the usual spots. We decided to give 'The Faldo' a blast this year and we were so glad we did. A lot of thought has gone into the design with huge and well placed bunkers, run off areas, sloping greens with the ability to place some cracking pin positions. A typical Faldo design as you need to think about every shot, even on the shorter holes. The condition of the course was very very good with fast running fairways and the greens in brilliant condition. The staff were brilliant, particularly the starter on the 1st tee.We will be adding this course to our annual trip's schedule without doubt.

A terrific course with lots of great holes especially on the hilly back nine. I have played the course twice now and both times it has been in top condition. A very friendly course manager - we walked the course in the pouring rain in October and the course manager kept coming out to us to check whether we wanted a buggy brought out to us. Only let down was service in the club house - it took an hour for our food to arrived and no one seemed particularly bothered when we complained.

Mad course! Impossible to play without a buggy especially the back 9. I like the use of grass run offs but Sir Nick has overdosed here. 11th hole has a ridge on the green which is bewildering. The 16th is a poor fill in hole. Some nice holes on the front nine but apart from the 18th the back 9 is poor. Fantastic facilities; no expense spared here but the course fails the test. The O’Connor course is a nice track but not particularly memorable. Both courses in average condition with rock hard fairways and average greens.

excellent golf course, well designed, a bit hilly, so have to use a buggy, but great fun to play. if you be there don`t miss to play the course, but choose the right tee-box. not easy from the back tees.
