Old Westbury (Overlook & Woods)
Old Westbury is another Long Island Club steeped in history, however this one did not realize golf was part of that history until 1960, when William F. Mitchell was hired to create the courses here. Prior to that point, it was part of the Whitney Estate; the colonial-style clubhouse is the mansion where the family once dwelled, and the 187-foot tower on the property was once part of the estate’s functioning windmill (it would have given even National Golf Links of America a run for its money, at least in the windmill regard).
Mitchell devised three sets of nine on the property, and the respective Overlook and Woods nines are traditionally combined as part of the more acclaimed route of 18. The property is located on one of the highest altitudes in the area and — although that means less on Long Island than it does in Colorado — there is still plentiful undulation to be tackled.
There are several ponds around the property that will require maneuvering, much of the enforcement of accuracy will be the tree-lined fairways.
