Oldfield

Greg Norman has created a number of courses in the South Carolina lowcountry, stretching from Myrtle Beach in the north to Hilton Head in the south, but the first of these layouts came at the Oldfield Club, a course located slightly inland of the latter island.

The property is broken into two distinct portions: The first occurring on the proper mainland, with another collection of holes looping across and through a virtual island surrounded by the Okatee River. Both sets of property offer the salt marshland that such lowcountry settings are popular for.

Norman uses the outskirts of the latter to craft holes that blend the schools of penal and strategic. No. 12 is a short par four where the wise move is to play an iron out to the fairway before traveling perpendicular across an inlet to the green. Norman, of course, gives the option for big hitters to carry the inlet and thread a large bunker on their way to the green.

The following par three features a long green snug against the same body of water, but with plenty of bailout area right. We’re sure that members have tried both routes on both holes during their time at the club; after all, variety is the spice of life.
