Bounded by Whangateau Harbour on one side and Little Omaha Bay on the other, the small beach town of Omaha is located on a sandspit that protrudes out from the Tawharanui Peninsula, an hour’s drive north from Auckland.
The 18-hole course at Omaha Beach Golf Club lies on the westerly flank of this headland, and it’s a lovely links-like layout that makes the most of its stunning seaside situation and the rolling rural landscape into which it sits.
First opened in 1975 as a 9-hole track, the modern day course now extends to eighteen holes, with golfers playing the first three original holes then crossing a road to continue with the nine holes that were added, before finishing with holes 13 to 18 on the original layout.
The modern day course extends to 5,369 metres from the back markers, playing to a par of 70, with five par threes on the scorecard. The longest of these short holes arrives at the 176-metre 17th, where golfers often face a tough tee shot into the prevailing south westerly wind.
