Omeya Golf Estate
Developed by businessman Andre van der Walt and situated less than half an hour’s drive south of Windhoek city centre, Omeya Golf Estate is a self-contained satellite town on the edge of the capital that lies between the main highway and the railway line, with its own school, clinic and shops.
Designed by Peter Matkovich, the course is something of an emerald golfing jewel that lies within the Namibian bushveld. Holes are routed in a figure of eight around dry river beds, the verdant hue of the greens and fairways contrasting sharply with the arid Acacia savannah surroundings.
Such is the sympathy with which the course was built to coexist with the natural landscape, less than a dozen ancient Camel Thorn trees were felled during construction. This was a very clever move as those that remain imbue the course with a maturity that belies its tender age.
Highlight holes include the par three 4th (played to a long, narrow “island green” that sits in the middle of a large wasteland area), the par four 6th (doglegging right off the tee to a bunkerless green that’s surrounded by trees) and the (stroke index 1) 18th, where the approach shot must avoid a big camelthorn tree in the middle of the fairway.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
