I played Palmetto during Masters week, it's under 30 minutes from Augusta and well worth leaving the fun of the Masters for half a day to visit. The course is steeped in history, apparently is the second oldest in the US, and has a really nice feel to it. Everything is laid out very clearly in front of you and what you see is what you get. You can take driver on most tees, although playing the 6,100 members tees means you don't always need to. Having said that the starter said it would be the longest 6,100 we've ever played and that was true. There was no point being short of any green as it was impossible to run a ball in so approach shots need to get to the pin and when you did the greens were slick with a lot of elevation change. Given the time of year we were there the course was just coming out of dormancy so there was a lot of brown around rather than green. The course was far from manicured (greens accepted) which didn't really detract from the experience but I imagine it looks very different in the summer months. It was a course which was possible to score on (I managed 33 points with a few short game disasters) but pay real attention around the greens and walk around every hole to check out the undulations that will be in front of you. Very enjoyable, would love to play it again!
