Really friendly and welcoming club. They good the extra mile to make visiting golfers feel welcoming which is a great strategy to get themselves combined with visitor to the nearby Carnoustie. Course books, range token, metal bag tag but also a glass of Kümmel. It is worth making time to explore the historic clubhouse with its ties to both Ben Hogan and India (the clubhouse is modelled on Royal Calcutta, at link back to the Dundee jute trade).
While the course has in the main a linky feel to it, it is also works through pine trees and is also a km or so inland. The middle part of the course is great and has holes that can match the best of links golf. Unfortunately it has a panhandle of six holes which join the clubhouse to the best part of the course. That seems to be an historic legacy of how the course was created, the agreed location of the railway halt and available true links land that border Monifeith.
The holes from 5 to 13 are great as they twist through gorse, bumpy small dunes, burns and the mentioned pine trees. The course condition was first class. The fairways were hard and the greens were very fast. Classic chip and run.
The famous 6th is the standout hole. The tight fairway and blind green, protected by gorse, long grass and small hillock dunes meant placement and keeping on the fairway was critical. The green slopes big time forward and is guarded by the famous Hogan’s bunker.
The 9th is a lovely par 3. Surrounded by pot bunkers and gorse on the baby dunes. That then leads to the visually stunning 12th that adds a twice crossed burn to the mix.
The closing holes are not of the same quality but are by no means easy. They are long and have OOB all down the right.
Overall we really enjoyed our day here. It was the final day of our Scottish road trip and a good way to close out the holiday. I am really glad we played here but would not rush back to play again.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
