The first private Jack Nicklaus Signature course to open in the state of Delaware, the fairways of this fabulous 18-hole layout are routed around a massive residential development at The Peninsula on the Indian River Bay. With almost half the holes skirting the tidal wetlands of the Bay and Lingo Creek, accuracy is most certainly the golfing watchword at The Peninsula. Notable holes on the front nine include the 194-yard 5th (where the offset green sits behind a small marsh) and the 535-yard 7th (where a sea of sand runs along the right flank of the fairway). On the back nine, the 459-yard 11th is a wonderful cape hole, whilst the short par four 15th is just the right length to entice big hitters into going for the green off the tee. The 565-yard home hole doglegs left around water from tee to green, with the Golden Bear himself calling this one “The Pebble Beach of the East”. Perhaps Jack can be accused of talking up the hole just a little but it’s a spectacular finisher nonetheless. |
Reviews for The Peninsula
Really a lot of fun to play this course, you appreciate the subtle design aspects more and more with each round. Between the daily different hole location setups, and the varying wind speed and directions off the bay, this course can vary drastically from round to round.
With water and/or OB coming into play on just about every hole, this course requires precision from tee to green, especially when the wind is blowing. It represents an excellent challenge for the intermediate to low handicapper.
Greens are always in fantastic condition, the entire course is really, fairways and greens usually play firm and fast.

A quality layout from the Nicklaus team but one not breaking any new ground in terms of overall presentation. There are a few holes where the "danger meter" ramps up but it's more about the superior overall turf quality rather than the holes themselves. The site is not exactly blessed with scintillating terrain since much of Delaware is mainly at or near sea level. The Peninsula is a great example of your basic high end Florida private club being located in Delaware.
