South Staffordshire Golf Club was founded with a 9-hole course in 1893. Fifteen years later, the club relocated to Tettenhall but some members remained behind to form Penn Golf Club, which means the original nine holes on the current course are older than the club.

Today, the layout measures 6,457 yards from the back tees, playing to a par of 70 (35 out then 35 in), with holes arranged as two returning nines on property that extends to less than 100 acres. Ten holes (#1 to #9 and #18) lie east of Sedgley Road, with the others on the opposite side of the road.

Highlights include the first (and shortest) of the four par threes at the 130-yard 7th (“Gorse”); the right doglegging par five 13th (“Ravines”) featuring three bunkers rather curiously located behind the green; and the strong par four 18th (“Compston’s Corner”) which plays to the two-tiered home green.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
