Wow! Holiday golf at it best.
This course sits atop jagged cliffs above the cold Southern Ocean that stretches out all the way to Antarctica. And add to that that the routing winds through protected fynbos and blind drives and approaches, making precision, not bombing, the way to play. If conditions worked against us on the previous course we played here we aced out, we played on a lovely blue skied day with hardly any wind, which compared to the day before, where you struggled to stand up, so fierce was the breeze coming off the ocean.
The club is located just to the south of Mossel Bay and we played here while staying at Fancourt, an easy 50 minute drive away. You turn off the highway and then past a large shanty township before turning right towards the exclusive Pinnacle Point secured residency. As well as the fynbos the fairways are also accompanied by some stunning properties, and cannot help the fragility of the contrasts of life in South Africa. As you go through the security gate, be aware that if you wish to warm up the driving range is set up here and not near the clubhouse, which is found at end of a further 5 minute drive perched atop the cliffs.
The course is split into two set of nine. Oyster is the first nine and works inland and back uphill to the highest part of the course before working back towards the clubhouse along the cliffs. Eden is a figure of eight which is the longer of the two sets and found the harder as well especially the finishing run. One thing to be aware of, at least when we played, is that there was not course maps on the holes out in the course so would recommend a bit of prep research before playing. The course is hilly and has some distances between green and next tees and would recommend hiring a buggy.
The opening tee is a blind uphill drive to a dog leg to the left. You really get a feel of being surrounded by inaccessible fynbos, the small gnarly bushes that is the natural cover of most of the western cape. Good luck to finding any balls, but access to it is prohibited (plus full of snakes). The fairway is thankfully wide as is turns to a well-protected green dug into the hill side. The next two holes continue the uphill climb to the highest part of the course, which is the 4th, which is a narrow strip in a sea of fynbos. The hard bouncy fairways and fast greens feel very linksy. It also marking the turning part of the routing back toward the sea.
Hole 5 is a par 5 that sweeps leftwards towards the ocean. the inside of the dog leg is home to a number of large bunkers. The drop to the ocean now accompanies you on the right back to the clubhouse as you now hit the most spectacular stretch you could imaging. Four shortish holes cram the cliff top experience to the maximum and precision is key, judging distance and impact of the wind. Six is a short par 4 driving over a ravine to a narrow target between dunes. Depth is difficult to judge but an accurate short will be rewarded by a short chippable distance to a narrow long green.
As you leave your buggy and walk down to the seventh tee you find you are accompanied by small furry animals munching away on the grass., which thought were marmots but are actually dassies (hyrax to give them their proper name). As you are teeing off on the wonderful cliff top short par 3, you may get a feeling of being watched. The surrounding bush if full of the cuddly animals peering out of the gorse. The shot here is all about deciding on the yardage, elevation and wind factoring and committing to hit the left side of the green.
Eight is a short par four where going for the green is a realistic option. The fairway curves to the right and all is below you. The boundary on the left is made up of housing and free drops for any shorts to the wrong side of the buggy track. The green is guarded by cliffs on three sides as well as being surrounded by bunkers. Some of the large houses here are spectacular, a new one is being built right at the pinnacle beyond the green, stunning is the only way to describe it. Oyster closes with another par 3, longer this time with a small fairway in front of the hole, played once more over cliffs to a long green over looked by the clubhouse.
The opening hole of Eden is another wide fairway, like the first, again uphill inland but this time turning to the right. Eleven is a sweeping dogleg over a valley as works back towards the sea and another stretch of cliff top holes. Twelve is a stunning drive to a tight fairway that slopes right to wards the sea. All down you right is the sea and a beautiful rocky beach. Everything slopes right. The right side of the fairway is guarded by a long cliff top bunker that run around 100 m, designed to gobble up any balls pushed right of the slopes. 13 is another stunning short par 3 over a ravine with the ocean crashing to your left, to a two tiered green.
14 is yet another intimating tee shots with cliffs all down the left and a good par four that turns inland and run uphill to the green. The course now works back on itself back inland towards the clubhouse, and a hard set of finishing holes. 16 is a tremendous par 5, long but wide fairway then works around a deep large gully on the left that guards the front of the green, any mishit approached will be sucked into this deep depression. 17 is the last par 3, long at 180m and built around fynbos and a large bunker that feeds in from the slope of the hole. The par 3 has a approach areas built into the front of the green to allow shorter hits to play up. That then leads to a truly stunning finishing par 5 what play along the top of the cliffs with the same rocky beach seen earlier. It sweeps downwards to its green perched between the cliffs and the clubhouse. It invites aggression for the foolish chasing a good finish (me) and the sea seems to pull shots to the right. A truly memorable hole.
If you are coming to South Africa this is a course to definitely play. If is visually stunning and penal but still a joy to play. The set up is great, the greens run fast and true and the bunkers are strategically placed and very good. This was the highlight of our trip and of the seven courses we played this topped the list.
