Point Grey

Venue for the Canadian Open back in 1954, when Pat Fletcher became the last home winner of the nation’s premier professional tournament, the course at Point Grey Golf and Country Club has also hosted the Canadian Women’s Open in more recent times, with Beth Daniel winning the event here in 2003.

The course is laid out within what was once called the Mole Property and it was constructed in 1922, the year the club was founded. Robert Bone, a British Columbia amateur champion of that era, was involved in setting out the fairways with a Mr Mike Gardner, but the course in play today is largely due to the efforts of professional Duncan Sutherland, who worked at the club during the 1930s and 1940s.

Situated on the Fraser River, between the courses at Shaughnessy and Marine Drive, the tree-lined fairways at Point Grey are a little narrow in places but there’s no denying the quality of a fabulous old golf track where a pair of sturdy par fives open and close the round at the 1st and 18th holes and a four nicely balanced par threes (at holes 2, 8, 13 and 17) serve up a quartet of thrilling one-shot challenges.

Point Grey completed the first phase of a planned course remodel under the stewardship of former Coore & Crenshaw associate Riley Johns in 2021. Three holes have been completed and the rest of the course is slated to begin in 2023.
