Poplar Grove

Architect Ed Carton consulted Sam Snead about the new course he was working on at Poplar Grove Golf Club in 2001, the year before Slammin’ Sammy passed away. It was a shrewd move because many of the great man’s suggestions found their way into the design.

Less than two decades after opening its tees for play, Poplar Grove Golf Club concluded a $1.7 million bunker renovation and tree clearing project, which completed in 2020. Long views have been restored and the bunkering, although not appreciably different in look, is now sustainable.

The course extends to just over 7,000 yards from the back markers, with fairways routed around a dammed section of Higginbotham Creek. Half a dozen holes are heavily influenced by the creek, with most of the other holes carved out of the dense woodland within the property.
