Port Carling
An early Thomas McBroom design dating back to 1991, the course at Port Carling is situated in the heart of the Muskoka region, where tight, tree-lined fairways pitch and roll across the craggy Canadian Shield landscape, weaving in and out of the rocky outcrops that give this part of Canada its distinctive visual appeal.
Almost two decades after it first opened for play, the course underwent a significant remodel when the architect was called back to make improvements. This resulted in the rebuilding of holes 1 and 4, the addition of a new tee on the 18th, the refurbishment of every bunker using Temiska sand and the reconstruction of all greens with sods of new bentgrass.
The course now measures a modest 6,430 yards in length, thanks mainly to a configuration that has only three par fives and five par threes in play (three on the front nine and two on the back nine). Short par fours at 5, 7, and 11 are feature holes here, the best of which is the 355-yard 5th, where the tee shot is played across an intimidating gully to a fairway that slopes from right to left.
