Port Shepstone

Situated on the north bank of the mighty Mzimkhulu River, close to where it empties into the Indian Ocean, Port Shepstone Country Club celebrated its centenary in 2015. Golf is just one of several sports – including cricket and Bowls – which are on offer to members here and the course is a Sid Brews design that dates back to 1948.

In actual fact, a terrible flood in 1959 all but washed away the entire layout so how much of the Brews layout was rescued is anybody’s guess. The club holds an annual Restoration Cup competition to commemorate the work that went into re-establishing the course and the clubhouse after the devastation caused by the water.

It’s a game of two halves at Shepstone, with the tight, tree-lined holes on the front nine routed around the wooded northern part of the property followed by a back nine that occupies more open terrain to the south, closer to the main coastal road.
