Set in the heart of affluent Cheshire this course has the feeling of being a little too rich for its own good. The course is OK, the clubhouse is beautiful. One can't help feeling they got the balance wrong. Portal can be a slog, there are precious few memorable holes bar the impressive 14th; a par 3 over a pond and surrounded by stately old trees. It is refreshing to see a 'new' course designed around the lie of the land, but it still feels somehow hollow. I hope that the course matures into middle age.
