The course is a must-visit for fans of links golf, but don't sleep on the front 9 as there are gems to be found there too.
We played Porthmadog as part of a 3-day trip that also included Royal St Davids and Nefyn. Out of the 3, Porthmadog suffered by comparison, but it's still a very enjoyable course to visit.
Overall, my opinion of the front 9 was better than others I'd read in advance of the trip. The holes are by no means bland parkland. More heathland in nature there are excellent holes.
The 4th is a stern par 4 (especially when into the wind as we played it) the 5th and 6th pretty holes with danger lurking and I was a big fan of the par 5 8th, especially the approach to the raised green.
As most reviewers will mention though, the attraction of a visit to Porthmadog is the back 9 and visually it's one of the most stunning places you could wish to play golf, the views over Morfa Bychan Bay and Black Rock Sands from the 12th and 13th tee are sensational.
I'm not sure the quality of the holes matches the views. It's personal preference but for me there were a few too many blind shots. The highlight for me was the approach to the raised 15th green framed by mounds on each side.
Still, the course is a must-visit for fans of links golf, but don't sleep on the front 9 as there are gems to be found there too.
