On our trip out to the coast we played Nefyn on the first day and PortMadog on the second. This is a tricky course and certainly a tale of two nines.
The front nine is a tree-lined parkland/heathland which is fairly flat but with tight winding holes with some stunning views as these are played under the hillside. Finishing off off with a tricky short par 5 to a raised green followed by a 150 yard par 3 back down to the club house.
The back nine, one of a trickiest links courses I've played. Most certainly a James Braid design for a natural links course.
The 10th sets things off easy with a fairly routine iron off the tee and wedge into the green (make sure you stay on the fairway!).
11th is where the fun starts! Par 3, blind into the green only being able to seeing the top half of the flag, deceptive where the green actually is! The 12th, stunning "little" par 4, 230 yards with about 30/40ft of incline, choose your tee shot carefully! 13th, par 3, the epitome of a blind shot. A "13" sign behind the green tells you where to aim and if you're playing into the wind, good luck!
The par 4 14th, SI1, yes another blind tee shot. Trust the post and let it fly, with OB left and long grass right, fairway is a must!
15th, from the tee, looks tricky, but a 180/200yard shot down the left side of the fairway leaves a nice wedge in the green.
16th ANOTHER blind tee shot. Again, trust the post and let it fly.
17th, tricky par 5, certainly a 3 shot hole with a double ditch before the small-ish green. Birdie is getable.
18th, routine tee shot leave a decent mid-iron into a big green.
Overall, a stunning course, however, if you are playing this after a round at Nefyn, a buggy is certainly recommended the undulating fairways on the back nine make this a very tricky walk. The main reason for the 4/6 rating, for the £50 green fee, the condition of the tees were questionable even having the play the 2nd tee shot off a mat in mid-July, questionable. The greens certainly could've been better, rolled true but were very slow.
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
