Porthmadog Golf Club
Course at Porthmadog Golf Club has a distinct identity. In the front, it's essentially open space (and this is the place where you can score) however this is the reverse nine which make you want to return since it's filled with great links holes.
When you take the tee off on the 2nd hole, the huge hills to the left will be in your path as you play out-and-back along the flat parkland side. Take your time on those three holes because the fourth hole can be a challenging par four. The 9th hole is a beautiful hole that is a par three, descending the hill, with the clubhouse serving as the backdrop.
Then cross the road to begin the back nine, and you'll see the reason why we all come to Porthmadog. It's really a question of "where do we go from here?' as you sit on the tee at 10, however, you must try to hit the markers since they are meant to be observed. The drive through Samson's Bay is lovely as you'll be pondering the way to play the 12th hole, which is a par four. After the climb to the 13th tee, take admiring the views of Harlech and Criccieth's castles. Harlech and Criccieth and Criccieth, but keep your eyes on the dunes as soon you'll be confronted by the 'Himalayas' '... two massive mounds you have to traverse between on the 14th hole, which is a par 4 with a stroke index of 1 - an incredible golf hole.
After you have finished your round, take a look at the garden that lie behind the green on 16th. the clubhouse of the past still stands just to the right of the modern home. Also, take note of the tiny stream that runs 'zigzag' across the green's front side on the 17th, a par 5, as it can impede your play when you attempt to reach the green in two shots.
We always have a great time on our winter getaway to Porthmadog and it's nice to observe the course being improved each year (humps were added to the 3rd hole to make an improved hole, and that water hole on 5th getting deeper drained into the fairway to give an extra thought process for when you hit the green). The clubhouse is large and relaxing. Also, there's a snooker space.
Give Porthmadog Golf Club a go since this back 9 is well worth the drive alone, particularly for those who love links golf. Enjoy!
