Jack Nicklaus worked on his first ever Latin American project in 1993 when he laid out the Arroyo and Mountain nines at Palmilla Golf Club. Since then, he’s been the designer of choice for many developers in Mexico, constructing more than twenty courses across the country.

At the end of 2014, the Golden Bear completed work on Quivira, his sixth Los Cabos layout, which is located on a truly stunning property at the end of the Baja peninsula, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Focal point of an 1,850-acre luxury resort, this fabulous 18-hole layout is reputed to have taken around eight years to construct at a cost of $40 million.

“This is one of the great pieces of property in the world,” Nicklaus said. “We tried to create some excitement on the mountain and in the dunes, and I believe we’ve created a golf course that plays as spectacular as it looks.” With ocean views on all eighteen holes, Quivira has more coastal exposure than any other course in the region, even though a number of holes twist their way through dunes and desert.

The course starts out from the shoreline, with the opening three holes heading inland before switching direction at the par five 4th, which plays over a pond to a wide, rolling fairway framed by dunes.

A three-quarters of a mile ride then follows to the short par four 5th, as the cart path crosses arroyo-spanning bridges on a switchback ride up the side of a cliff to arrive at the tee. Measuring only 310 yards, it’s also rated stroke index 1 as it’s fraught with danger from start to finish.

Perched almost 300 feet above the waves crashing onto the rocks below, the tee plays down to a sliver of fairway that clings to the side of the granite cliffs before falling further to a small green that somehow defies gravity by not falling off the precipice onto the beach below – a truly stunning hole that’s one of Jack’s best ever designs.

The par three 6th and par four 7th continue to hug the strand before the routing moves inland, returning briefly at the short 13th, where an all-or-nothing tee shot is required to find a tiny green sitting on a granite shelf above the beach. The only par three on the back nine, this 148-yard little beauty is a real test, especially when the wind is up.

The 14th is a delightful hole, its bunkerless fairway doglegging abruptly to a long, thin “peek-a-boo” green that’s hidden in the dunes. After reaching the highest point on the course at the par five 15th, it’s downhill all the way to the finish, where the 18th returns to the beach.

WOW! One thousand times WOW!! This is maybe the most spectacular piece of land on which I have played golf in my entire life. It has dunes, level changes, Ocean, carries across cliffs, mountains, desert, sun and views of the new Tiger Woods Course at Diamante (El Cardonal). I was lucky to play this course Quivira Golf Course - Photo by reviewerjust 2 days after Jack Nicklaus played it in its inaugural event last December 2014. It was a complete day and all I have to say is that you must play it, it is not only spectacular but also very well designed and with TE Platinum Paspalum Grass coast to coast, it will be always in pristine shape. We arrived very early in the morning and had a welcome breakfast just at the driving range, which was sensational. Warming up and having first class food and drinks at the same time doesn’t happen too often. Then the putting green is surrounded by very nice landscaping, which makes it very fotogenic. Not even 8.30am and I was already totally satisfied by the experience. It was the Los Cabos Tournament for TTOO and we played a Shotgun starting on 17. But it will be easier to relate the course from first hole: 1-2 par 4 & 3 are in the desert and Quivira Golf Course - Photo by reviewerjust 2 good holes to start, where reachable uphill par 4 third hole is just great. Par 5 fourth downhill towards the Ocean, with a tee box which can make it play 744 yards, with a water carry of 270!! Then you move 1km up the hill to confort station and the 2 most spectacular holes: par 4 fifth reachable and dramatic sixth with a cliff all along left side. Seventh is a nice par 4 with the Temple where they filmed Brad Pitt’s Troy movie just beside the tee. Eight is a very nice uphill par 4 before arriving to the second confort station and 9 is a par 3 in the middle of the desert, with a very tough to read green. Then 10-13 are four of the most spectacular holes in the world: downhill par 5 where you see all Tiger’s Course, 11th a nice par 4 with a very tough approach shot, 12th a dramatic double dogleg par 5 with the green towards the cliff and short 13th with a carry over the water to a very small green. 14th is a peculiar 90° dogleg par Quivira Golf Course - Photo by reviewer4, before a very demanding par 5 on 15th where tee shot needs to be very accurate. The last 3 par 4s go to the club house and towards the Ocean, with full views of the city and water. A very playable course, very high service and a destination where you have some of the best courses in the Caribbean. This Quivira will be very soon at the top. One last thing to add: the Comfort Stations. 3 of them at tee #5 (the most spectacular one, just on the cliff), tee #9 (over the dunes watching the Ocean) and tee #16 where tee shot has a drop of 40m to the fairway. The best drinks, tequila, nachos, fruit made it a full excellent service and experience. The only thing some golfers may not like is that from green to next tee the distances are sometimes too long, in some cases over 500 metres.
