Redwoods
The Redwoods Golf Course is located in Langley, British Colombia, approximately a 30-minute drive east of downtown Vancouver. The course opened for play in 1994 and was designed by architect Ted Locke, former Graham Cooke design associate. Locke’s biggest challenge centred on the site’s heavy clay soil and consequent drainage issues.
The Redwoods measures a modest 6,516 yards from the tips but higher handicappers may choose two further forward tees. The golf course features mature tree-lined fairways and the peaceful, scenic location is immediately calming. The architect worked round 45 acres of environmentally protected areas in the design and the commitment to protect the nature and beauty of this area is obvious.
The course supplies a few choices off the tee and offers a mix of target golf and bomb-away holes. Redwoods also demands some interesting approach shots, with some greens well guarded with bunkers and greenside collection areas.
The Redwoods accolades are justified, a fair but challenging layout with great course conditions. It's not a traditional track with only three par fives, all of which are reachable in two, but there are four solid par threes. The two-shot holes are also strong, especially the 430-yard 6th, which asks for a right to left tee shot and a solid long iron approach shot to a tough green. Greens are generally large and present legitimate opportunities to make long distance putts.
Despite some elevation changes and uneven lies, Redwoods is a playable course, where forest pine stands line most fairways – exemplified by the par five 4th hole, which has a visually intimidating tee shot.
The Redwoods is an easy-walking golf course with a laid-back and casual feel, which comes thoroughly recommended.
