Rio Mar (River)

Bounded by the El Yunque rain forest and the Atlantic, the sprawling estate that was once known as the Westin Rio Mar has be renamed the Wyndham Grand Resort and it features a pair of great courses from two very different golfing eras.

Nephew and uncle, Tom and George Fazio, fashioned the Ocean course in the mid 1970s whilst the River course at Rio Mar was one of Greg Norman’s first designs when it opened in 1997.

Measuring a few yards short of 7,000 yards, the River course has seven of its fairways routed alongside the Mameyes River and – even though they are bounded by marsh and wetlands – they are quite forgiving, with minimal forced carries from the tees.

The four par three holes on the scorecard, two on the front nine and two on the back nine, bring a little respite during the round before being followed immediately by long par fives – not that the par threes are that short actually, playing between 174 and 192 yards from the back markers.

The World Amateur Team Championship was held here in 2004, when the biennial Eisenhower Trophy was won by the team from the USA.
