River Bend Club

River Bend Club represents one of the most thorough course transformations in the greater Washington D.C. area — a complete ground-up rebuild of every green, bunker, fairway, tee and bridge carried out by Keith Foster over the original Ed Ault and Al Jamison routing. Stonework walls and bridges frame ponds and cascading streams throughout the Fairfax County property, and the routing's intelligent use of the rolling hardwood terrain gives the layout a character rarely found this close to a major American city. The result is a private layout that holds its own against the strongest clubs in the mid-Atlantic region.

History of River Bend Club

River Bend Golf and Country Club opened in 1961, with the original 18 holes designed by Edmund B. Ault and Al Jamison across the rolling countryside of Great Falls, Fairfax County. A 1998 update introduced further refinements under Al Jamison and Tom Clark. Foster was engaged to develop a full renovation master plan in 2003, with construction work carried out from 2010 to 2011.

The project proved exceptionally demanding. Working within strict Fairfax County environmental regulations — governing erosion control, sediment retention and ground disturbance — superintendent Tom Lipscomb and Foster's team rebuilt every hole from scratch, replaced all bunkers with a new liner and drainage system, undertook extensive tree clearance, and constructed new cart paths, bridges, irrigation and a maintenance facility. The former holes 8 and 9 were resequenced to become 17 and 18, a back-to-back par-5 finish on the back nine was restructured into a par-5, par-3, par-4 sequence, and the golf holes themselves were reconceived as Foster originals. The course reopened on 1 July 2011, precisely fifty years after the club's founding.

Course Layout & Playing Experience

River Bend Club is a par-71 inland layout stretching to nearly 7,000 yards from the back tees. Both nines return to the clubhouse, with the routing departing from and arriving at the highest point on the property, producing elevation changes and views across the hardwood canopy that distinguish it from the flatter parkland layouts common to the region.

Foster's bunkering is a defining feature of the redesign. The flashed-face sand hazards use a modern liner and drainage system to hold their shape and drain quickly after rain, a practical upgrade that also sharpened the visual drama of approach shots.

The routing mixes strategic, angled holes — where players must commit to a line before a tee shot's destination becomes clear — with more direct tests that use gradient and green contour to supply the complexity.

The par-4 12th is among the most talked-about holes on the property. Originally a rigid right-angle dogleg of limited strategic interest, Foster converted it into a 312-yard diagonal puzzle. Golfers can attempt to drive the putting surface, lay back to a mid-iron distance, or navigate a fairway wood into the front of the green — but five fairway bunkers and a specimen tree narrow the options, and the green's pronounced internal contours mean that choosing the wrong sector of the putting surface can make a routine birdie opportunity feel considerably less routine. The par-5 9th and 18th holes close each nine at the clubhouse, routing back through the lakes and streams that give the property much of its visual identity.

River Bend Club is among the strongest private clubs in the Washington D.C. corridor, its reputation built on exceptional conditioning and the scale of ambition behind the 2011 Foster redesign.

The routing works the natural terrain of Fairfax County with precision — diagonal angles, flashed bunkers, multi-option short par-4s and two dramatic closing par-5s produce a course that rewards repeat study.
