The Crestline neighbourhood of Fort Worth holds a special place in Texas golf history, home to River Crest Country Club - the city's oldest private golf course and the eighth country club established in the entire state. Since opening on 6th May 1911, this pioneering venue has maintained its distinctive character whilst adapting to serve generations of Texas golfers.
River Crest emerged from a vision shared by Fort Worth's leading businessmen and community members, all passionate golfers seeking to create something unprecedented in Texas. Their innovative approach included residential housing within the club grounds - the first such development in the state.
The club's founding in 1910 represented more than establishing another golf venue; it pioneered a new model for American country club development. Located just five miles from downtown Fort Worth in what would become the prestigious Crestline area, River Crest broke new ground by incorporating residential development into its business model.
The original layout came from the drawing board of Tom Bendelow in 1911, the architect also responsible for the Dallas Country Club. Bendelow's work was later enhanced by A.W. Tillinghast in 1921, creating a design lineage featuring two of golf architecture's most significant early figures. Tillinghast's contributions added strategy to Bendelow's routing, establishing the foundation for the narrow fairway corridors and small, well-protected greens that define the course today.
Williams & Gill Associates undertook significant upgrades in 1996, adding length to accommodate modern play whilst respecting the original design intent. More recently, Colligan Golf Design has provided enhancements in 2009 and 2018, ensuring the layout remains relevant for contemporary golf.
River Crest presents a par-70 layout spanning approximately 6,300 yards. The flat terrain, typical of the Fort Worth area, features narrow fairway corridors that require consistent ball-striking, whilst the small greens present challenging targets for approach shots.
Despite minimal water hazards affecting only a couple of holes, the layout maintains its reputation for testing even accomplished golfers through tight driving lanes and well-positioned green complexes.
The putting surfaces feature bent grass, providing consistent rolling characteristics throughout the year, whilst 419 Bermuda grass fairways and Zoysia grass tees ensure optimal playing conditions across Texas's varied seasonal conditions.
