PGA Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya comprises an 81-mile stretch of coastline on the Yucatan Peninsula that runs south from the famous resort of Cancún, along highway 407, to the less well-known tourist destination of Tulum.

Along this seaboard, you’ll find a number of top-class golf facilities such as Greg Norman’s Mayakoba El Camaleon, PB Dye’s Playa Paraiso and the Steve Nicklaus-designed course at Cozumel.

PGA Riviera Maya Golf Club is Grupo Piñero’s first golf development and the company commissioned Robert Trent Jones Jnr to set out twenty-seven holes, comprising an 18-hole championship layout and an above average 9-hole par three course.

There’s still plenty of room to extend the golf facility within this 290-acre site and a further nine playing corridors have already been cleared to the south of the main course in readiness for a future expansion.

The present course is situated next to an old limestone quarry, where its fairways were carved from a landscape of dense jungle. Feature holes on the front nine include the 4th and the 8th, where water threatens at both greensites.

There’s also a strong finish to the round, starting at the long par five 16th (doglegging around a stone-lined water hazard) and ending at the 436-yard 18th, where the hole plays uphill, past several rocky outcrops, to the home green.

The resort now wears the PGA moniker - a very good indication of the quality and presentation of golf course that awaits you. Amenities now include grilled meat and pizza oven halfway houses. The clubhouse was also upgraded along with the practice facilities - including an illuminated driving range and indoor Trackman facility.

The course also received some care and attention with the bunkers being rebuilt. The course receives love from the tour players - having hosted the PGA Tour Latin America. The venue takes the next step with a Korn Ferry Tour visit in 2025.
