Rochford Hundred
Rochford Hundred Golf Club started in 1893 as Southend Golf Club around 1893. The club was comprised of members who played on a nine-hole course situated on the Southchurch Hall Estate in Southend. Three years after, the local council had plans to construct a sewer that would run through the course, causing the club to move and relocate to its present site.
Peter Paxton from Musselburgh laid the course for the first time and the course was opened to play on the 18th of January, 1897. James Braid played the course numerous times following, but the club finally engaged him in 1923 for a redesign of the layout.
The project was executed over the course of a few years and was completed in February 1925, when they F.G. Hawtree & J. H. Taylor construction company finished building bunkers as per Braid's requirements. Following World War II, it took until 1949 before the 18 holes were put back in play.
Today, the course covers 6,355 yards from back tees. It plays to a par 72 and features it's River Roach (really simply a stream that flows in a tidal pattern) entering play on many holes, running across the fairway just in front of the green. These include the par three 7th hole, par 9th par 4, par 4 14th and the par 17th.
