I played the course in September 2024 on a golf tour of Ireland, starting at Ballyliffin and concluding at Ballybunnion. I wanted to wait to reflect on all the courses and consider my thoughts after some reflection, before writing a review.
The course left me with an unusual feeling, I simply do not rate it close to where the course lies within various lists. Much like Kingsbarns, Castle Stuart, and Dumbarnie in Scotland, the course was wide open of the majority of the tees. Quite beautiful in places but largely due to the stunning vista and not what I would consider golf course design. Cannot help feel if the ranking was lower, I would have enjoyed it more, as I would not have had a slightly deflated feeling.
I understand these courses have their place but I much prefer a more old fashioned links, my preference being for the sister course, Sandy Hills, around at the main clubhouse.
Having said all these things though, I would say the course was in good condition, previous reviews suggest very poor condition but I thought the turf all round was fairly good. The greens were on the slower side but with the high winds, I can see why they cannot cut them too neat.
I would not head back to Rospenna to play this course, I would for Sandy Hills and I think that is the best way I can sum up my feelings. I just did not like the lunar style land scape the course lies in, the routing just didn't feel great for me.
Overtime the course may settle in and start to feel more established, in places the fairways were so wide that I felt I was playing down a football pitch, in particular on 18, where the landing area felt like it was wider than long.
An OK course, with great views but nothing too special in my eyes.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
