Mote Park, County Roscommon- AddressArdsallagh Beg, Mote Park, Co. Roscommon, Ireland
Founded in 1904 on Lord Crofton’s the old Mote Park Estate , Roscommon Golf Club had a 9-hole layout in play until the early 1990s, when an additional 58 acres of land were obtained, allowing Eddie Connaughton to expand the course into the eighteen holes that are now in use. The clubhouse was rebuilt in 1996 following a fire that destroyed the old building.
“It is a simple parkland course that flows back and forth over a very gentle hill, with fairways separated by semi-mature trees, and a few mature ones appearing here and there,” is how Kevin Markham’s describes the course in the book Hooked: an amateur’s guide to the golf courses of Ireland. The author continues: “It’s not a course you’ll go out of your way for but pleasant if you’re in the neighbourhood.”
The course measures 6,069 metres from the back markers, playing to a par of 72, with most of the holes orientated along a northwest-southeast axis on a property extending to 120 acres. Highlight holes include short par fours at the 310-metre 3rd and 335-metre 17 th , along with both the par threes on the back nine at the pond-protected 12th and heavily bunkered 16th.
