Royal Dornoch is about as good as it gets for me. I really contemplated giving it 6 out of 6 but is anything ever perfect? Whilst not perfect it is about as close as a golf course can ever get to it. It effortlessly combines all of the old school qualities that anyone could ever ask for with what remains a proper golf course. I am not sure that a review should go into a hole by hole break down but the 1st eases you in just the way you would expect a traditional Scottish course should. The 2nd ups the difficulty immeasurably and has you worried this could be a tough day. That worry is removed in a flash as you emerge onto the 3rd tee and the most wonderful golfers playground opens up in front of you. I genuinely wish that I could take that first walk again. The course is challenging, there are holes where scorecards could face the risk of being ripped up but for the most part it is all there right in front of you. Options off the tee, little in the way of tricks combined with the best links turf and conditioning I can ever remember. Could it be improved? I can hear an argument that 16 is a weak, slog up the hill not in keeping with the rest of the course but the view from the 16th green soon makes me forget that. This is truly a golfers paradise not to be missed.
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
