About a kilometre away from Freo, this woodland course through rolling hills is nestled in suburbia. At points on this course you get amazing views of the Indian Ocean and Fremantle Port.
The fairways are the highlight here, slightly weather beaten on my visit but overall a pleasure to play off. We kicked off on the 10th tee, downhill, dogleg left and a nice challenge to start. The newly rebuilt 17th a tricky par three was fun to play, it didn't help that I put my ball into the right hand bunker with a pin position that would challenge even the best professional. This was followed by the massive 520m par five 18th, reaching the hill requires a huge drive, getting over it is almost superhuman.
The uphill 7th par four feels like you are going up the a small mountain with the green doglegged out of sight sitting way above the tee. The constant song from the Carnaby Cockatoos, Galahs and Kookaburras in the tall eucalyptus and pine trees brings this course to life.
Royal Fremantle is good to play and an enjoyable track, however, the only downside was the condition of the greens, pretty slow and beaten up, not great for what could be one of the best courses in WA.
