The first time I played at Hoylake I played the best round of my life. But I didn't enjoy it. I have now been fortunate to play it a further four times. My standard of golf has slipped dramatically but my appreciation of Hoylake has grown massively. It can be flat at times with little definition to the holes. But this itself provides it's own challenge. Depth perception is very difficult and on the 1st and 16th playing around the OOB it makes it more difficult. Strategy and trust to hit your lines is paramount. The stretch of holes from 5-16 are fantastic and would fit in anywhere on any links! Also what adds to the whole experience is the clubhouse and the the staff. Always friendly and jovial and ready to help.I think it says a lot when you look at the champions the links have produced. Most notably in recent years Mr T Woods and Mr R McIlroy. The best players in the world at the time. All said and done - I think it takes time to fully understand and like Hoylake but it is worth it.
