Royal Mayfair
Established in 1922, Royal Mayfair Golf Club has been described as “pomp and circumstance tucked away in the North Saskatchewan River valley”. The club is one of only several Canadian golfing societies with the “Royal” prefix and its splendid course is certainly worthy of such a regal club.
The renowned architect Stanley Thompson extensively remodeled the par 71, 6,744-yard layout in 1927 to the extent that it is regarded as a Thompson original. The course was chosen to host the Canadian Open in 1958 when Wes Ellis’s score of 267 was good enough to claim the title.
Mayfair is still capable of testing the very best of golfers as witnessed by the top lady professionals in 2007 when the Canadian Women’s Open was held here. On that occasion, Lorena Ochoa held off the challenge of a strong field to win the event by three strokes from Paula Creamer.
