This course takes no mercy, it’s a monster with some fantastic holes, 1 - 4 stretch was my favourite. Having played the other neighbouring courses you can see why this is still on The Open rota as it’s a vast, undulated expanse of land which the others don’t have. The starter was fantastic and super friendly.
The club was lacking in its hospitality, pro shop was friendly enough but wasn’t that knowledgeable, the bar was steeped in history but they served our group Guinness from a can, of which the bartender admitted that he wasn’t good a pouring it so we poured our own. The halfway hut must have 200 framed pictures advertising Bovril. Clearly, there is a story behind this but when we enquired the member of staff said he had no idea.
I’m pleased I played the course and I ticked it off my list but felt the whole experience was underwhelming.
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
