Royston
A golf course was first established here in 1869 but it lasted only a couple of years. In 1892, Royston Golf Club was established, with members playing on a course that followed much of the original design.
Andrew Kirkaldy, twice runner-up in The Open between 1879 and 1889, became the club professional in 1893 and the Royston Ladies Golf Club was founded fourteen years later in 1907.
Today, the course extends to 5,910 yards from the back tees, with par set at 70 (36 out then 34 in). The front nine starts and finishes with a par five, whilst the inward half features three par threes at the 10th, 12th and 16th.
Highlight holes include the long par four 4th (rated stroke index 1); the first of the par threes at the 178-yard 5th; the right doglegging par four 15th (with three bunkers guarding the front of the green); and the short par four 18th which plays to a bunkerless home green.
