Teeing off under the floodlights in the winter, with a cool breeze replacing the usual desert heat and the fairways glowing under the stars, is not a bad way to spend an evening.
Golfing in Kuwait's scorching sun? No thanks. That's why Sahara Kuwait Golf Resort's night golf is your best option. The whole resort is over-the-top for my taste, but I was intrigued to try night golf and had an extra evening when visiting.
Golf isn't well played in Kuwait but is taking off in neighboring countries, so it's likely a matter of time. Teeing off under the floodlights in the winter, with a cool breeze replacing the usual desert heat and the fairways glowing under the stars, is not a bad way to spend an evening. In the spirit of playing variety, this was nothing I'd seen or played before.
My first Peter Harradine course. Perhaps a lesser-known architect, he seems to have courses in more remote corners of golf, and reviews seem to favor the golf being more for the average golfer than the pro. Sahara had that feeling. It was very playable, with plenty of water and massive canvases of sand—which you would expect. They had bunkers, but you could have just used the existing sand, and it would have felt more natural. There were some fun holes, notably the 7th hole, an island par 4.
There is very little information online about the course, but some highlight the pristine greens and well-maintained fairways. In my opinion, it's the night golf that steals the show. Floodlit holes let you play well past sunset, giving the course an entirely different feel. Perhaps the biggest surprise: the adjacent horse racing track had camels doing practice runs! You don't see that every day.
The routing seems to squeeze in holes where it could to make 18, and some of the lighting seems to miss key areas where your errant shots may go, but that's more likely my fault than the course's.
It's not going to wow you like Dubai night golf, but if you're in Kuwait and looking to play golf, this is the only option. It's worth spending an evening under the Arabian sky. It will be a quick round and a great way to get out of the scorching heat.
