The quickest way down to Bandon from Portland is not by following the coast, however those looking for a more holistic tour of public golf in Oregon may do well to take the longer route. Along the way they’ll discover the course at Salishan Resort, one of the original destination courses along the coast for those seeking golf in the old Scottish style.

Although the 18 holes at Salishan still play at a distance reminiscent of its origins — just more than 6,400 yards from the back tees — the club underwent a significant renovation during 2003, helped along by former PGA professional and Oregon native Peter Jacobsen.

The course is not quick to get you out to the coast, building suspense with a front nine that is built on the east side of Route 101, and then playing a few holes into the back nine before the ocean becomes apparent as you approach the green at No. 14. The next hole is a mid-length par three (170 yards) but the coastal winds can make the club choice less than predictable. Additional hazards on the hole are the distracting beauty of the natural sand dunes that line provide a corridor to the green, and the views of Cascade Head to the north.
