The Winged Foot of the West, only Tilly Course in the area with the next one being in the center of the country, far away from his prolific career in the Philadelphia and NY rea. But this is not only about the Golf Course but about the experience.
But this Club it is not only about the Golf Course, which is phenomenal from 1st to 18th, but also the club and the experience of being there, the stories, past members and I feel that everyone lucky enough to play it should be on one side grateful for it and on the other one generous to share the sensations on a place that is truly special.
Located just hundreds of meters from Olympic Club and TPC Harding Park, this one will probably never be on TV so will try to describe it as much as possible as a golf course.
First moments were entering Locker Room full of old fashioned lockers which give it a special touch and spending usual time on the ProShop to select carefully which souvenirs would be added to my collection.
After just 5mins on the putting green and a short range session (it is quite small and short), I was ready to walk this piece of history together with an Academy Awards Winner which was a special landmark to my morning. Not only for the golf but for some of the stories about movies in the past, when hosted on a place like this you have to be ready to listen to stories and listen carefully to them, they will for sure be part of the experience.
But let’s go back to the golf course which is quite good! Greens are typically Tillinghast, sloped and very tough to put, with his classical bunkering and rolling fast, tee shots are open enough not to stress yourself with potential lost balls … the perfect game for a morning round! Piece of land and trees are similar to TPC Harding Park and Olympic, high Conifer Cypress trees and other species add to a very nice walk where you don’t feel to be in a neighborhood, very quiet and calm with no noise.
The following holes are worth to be highlighted:
2nd is a dogleg left with a sort of canyon shaped fairway and then to an elevated green, play longer than actual yardage and putting from above the hole can be extremely quick.
4th is a quite long 3 with green sloping left to right, it has one of the most open views of the property.
6th plays dogleg left and little downhill, missing the green lateral pin high will be a very tough recovery, try to be short if to miss.
7th The Duel hole is the most special hole I have played in a while. A downhill 175yds to a long sloped green with very cool bunkering, but this is just the least special part of it. It is called The Duel Hole as on the right side of the tee the last Duel in USA history took place and two monoliths stand there where both contestants were standing. Guns used are kept framed in the Club, unfortunately no pics but it was quite intense trying to go back in history and imagine the place and the moment.
9th goes back to the Club House and second shot offers a nice image of the entire building for you. Another sloped Tilly Green so make sure your approach shot comes from the right side.
11th is q severely sloped back to front green where by air is the only way and it is quite deceiving off the tee as it looks to play shorter. Missing lateral again is a lost stroke.
12th goes to the beginning of the property, the highest spot and a very tough to judge elevated second shot. Anything short can fall back quite a bit.
11th could be the easiest hole on the course but it is not, sloping severely from the right and when putting from there breaks look to the left and are mostly the other way. Our host, a very nice man, made two 1s there but has failed to ever make a par!!
17th is my favorite tee shot as it asks for a power fade which is the easiest I can produce but then the second shot can confuse you as wind is not to be felt but it is there. My shot came 20yds short and it was the one I wanted to hit!
18th is the perfect end to a course like SFGC, a good 5 with the entire house again in front of you.
The very nice round was followed by lunch and a perfect Tour of the highlights of the Club House, you feel it there how special it is. Silent. Peaceful. Demanding. A very special place.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
