Sand Point Country Club boasts all the amenities you might expect to find at such a recreational facility – such as a junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, four floodlit outdoor tennis courts, and a state-of-the art fitness centre – but its crowning glory is the Frank James-designed golf course that was built when the club was founded in 1927.
English-born James designed and constructed over a hundred courses in a career spanning more than three decades after the end of World War I and the knowledge he acquired while working with people like Willie Park Jr, Alex Findlay, Wayne Stiles and A.V. Macan was put to good use above the shores of Lake Washington at Sand Point.
Nick Schaan from DMK Design carried out a course renovation at the end of 2019, rebuilding a number of holes, re-bunkering the entire layout and thinning out a lot of the trees which were blocking the gorgeous long views of the lake and the Cascade Mountain range. Dealing with serious elevation changes on such a tight site was a real challenge, testing the architect’s skills to the full.
