If there is a need for another seaside Open Championship venue, then the East course at Saunton Golf Club might be a worthy candidate.

If coming to Southwest England, this is one for the itinerary.

Saunton with its two links courses, the East and the West, is quite rightly regarded as one of the best links offerings in England, and yet the courses are separated from the sea by half a mile of large and craggy sand dunes, so the sea is at no point visible.

If we ever found a situation where The Open Championship didn't need all the infrastructure, and the tented village and an abundance of hotels in the local area, Saunton East would be the next course to host the games oldest major competition.

There are some courses with an almost dreamy view from the clubhouse - Saunton was one of those - on a gorgeous Sunny day and, a day later as the wind had picked up (to mere breeze level to be clear).

A proper test of links golf.

The links at Saunton is an immense piece of golfing landscape and stretches out as far as the eye can see.

A spectacular piece of land greets you at Saunton, with undulating dunes framing the majority of holes which gives it a feel of some of the classic duned courses around the UK
But don’t let the terrain be what you judge the east on, as the layout of the course is spectacular in itself, with hole after hole of golfing splendour!

Good links course although the wind was almost prohibitive, angry and swirling.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
