Within a year of its formation in 1907, Scrabo Golf Club had a 9-hole course ready for its founding members and this layout remained in play until 1971 when the purchase of additional land allowed the club to develop an 18-hole course.
Situated on high ground above Newtownards, today’s course lies on the gorse-covered contours of Scrabo Hill and there are wonderful panoramic views to be enjoyed from many of the fairway vantage points beneath the imposing landmark of Scrabo Tower.
Holes rise and fall with regularity over a dramatic landscape that affords many thrilling elevated tee positions where golfers can open their shoulders and let loose with the driver. The tone is set at the first hole where Christy O’Connor Snr has been quoted as saying it’s his favourite opening hole in all of Ireland.
This is such a unique golfing experience unlike any other in the country. Don't be swayed by it's position on the list. This course demands accuracy and strong decision making. An absolute gem of a course and well worth a visit when in NI!
Had a great morning being tested by a challenging and enjoyable golf experience while trying not to be distracted by the vast and impressive scenery and views. We would highly recommend a game at Scrabo and for the price it is great value. The locals are lucky to have such a great option. Localknowledge would have been extremely handy for a number of blind shots. It would be great if the course could provide a map on the card or in a course guide or have some diagrams on signage at the tee to give visitors more of an idea what lies ahead. Unfortunately we didn't have time to stay for a drink in the club house and soak in the views. Thanks to the trainee pro for his welcome and advice.
