Twenty years after businessman Marvin Leonard constructed the course at Colonial, he commissioned Robert Trent Jones Snr to build another 18 holes at Shady Oaks Country Club, disregarding the advice of his friend and advisor Ben Hogan who thought the site was too hilly.
Coore and Crenshaw renovated the layout in 1995 but the Australian design firm of Ogilvie Cocking and Mead conducted an extensive course upgrade in 2019/2020 which created width, promoted short grass areas and brought into play interesting green complexes with thought-provoking bunkers.
Tree removal also opened up views across the course, with the more elevated holes offeing views of downtown Fort Worth. This work also revealed a barranca on the 5th hole, some steep, rocky areas around the 5th and 6th holes, and a skyline green on the 17th hole.
