Shaker Heights
Donald Ross designed a significant number of golf courses in the United States and healthy chunk of courses in Ohio as well, of which one of the earliest was the club at Shaker Heights. Perhaps the route reminded him a bit of his first job at Royal Dornoch, as — although the layout does return to the clubhouse at the halfway point — the back nine is stretched along a very thin piece of property, creating a pointing finger out from the clubhouse.
Many of these holes are divided by the South Branch of the Doan Brook, which creates both scenery and hazard, including on the front nine. All in all, ten holes will cross the stream at least once, and only three holes do not abut the creek in any form.
The course hosted the World Championship of Women’s Golf from 1981-’84.
