Shanty Creek’s The Legend Course is often held as the best course at the resort, a title generally contested between the Cedar River course. Legend is in itself the product of a legend, Arnold Palmer. The course takes advantage of a prime piece of property north of Traverse City, with views of Lake Bellaire from the higher points along the route.
A more prominent body is the resort’s title creek, which comes into play during Nos. 8 and 9, its only appearance across the resort’s four courses. During No. 8, players will first hit over a separate creek flowing from an irrigation pond and then players will choose whether to challenge Shanty itself, which sits in front of the green, for a potential eagle putt. The next hole will feature a similar challenge, but in a par four format.
This is a true out-and-back 18, so be sure to stock up on supplies before you hit the trail. The Legend is frequently considered the tougher of the two prime courses at Shanty Creek, due both to its rolling topography and its tighter fairways.
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
